An FPS booster maintained by Pooka
Welcome to Extreme Initfs, a must-have performance-driven mod for Star Wars Battlefront II designed to improve FPS on any system, no matter what graphic settings you use! This is the perfect mod to use if you are running struggling hardware, going places with a portable laptop, or if you just want a nice performance boost. Additionally, this mod is completely safe online, fully compatible with other mods, and like BetterIntifs, this mod will fix any issues with mods not loading or appearing invisible in-game.
2.0 Update out now! Be sure to read the patch notes below!
How does this work?
After analyzing thousands of specific configuration lines in SWBF2’s developer console, I’ve identified and adjusted the settings that have a real impact on performance — some by reducing or disabling effects, others by optimizing how the game renders, all resulting in increased performance and smoother fps.
If you didn't know by now, SWBF2 specifically disables the use of the "user.cfg" file, which is a user-created file used to increase fps in many Frostbite Engine-based games. However, in this game, making a user.cfg file does absolutely nothing, which is why I created this mod to benefit all players.
TL;DR: You’ll see around 5% to 40% FPS gains, depending on the preset you decide to use and the map being played in-game.
What are the different presets?
There are two different presets: Balanced and Extreme.
The first one is the Balanced preset. It gives you a solid FPS boost while keeping most of the game’s visuals intact to retain that visual quality that still stands strong today. If you care about how the game looks but want smoother performance and more FPS, this one’s for you.
Then there’s the Extreme preset. This one makes a somewhat noticeable visual difference to the game but gives you the highest possible FPS gains without breaking the game. This is ideal for laptops or struggling old hardware that is in dire need of that massive performance boost. Just note that lighting on certain maps will look darker - but it's not as bad as you may think - it's needed for raw performance!
How do I install this?
1. Download the .zip file in the Files tab. Once downloaded, open the .zip file and choose which preset you want: Balanced or Extreme.
2. After opening the specific folder preset, you will see a file called "Initfs_Win32". Note this for later.
3. Navigate to your Star Wars Battlefront 2 directory. You can find this on Windows by doing the following:
- Search for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" in the start menu
- Click the option "Open File Location" in the start menu
- Finally, right-click the shortcut and click "Open File Location" again
4. Once in the directory, look for a folder named "Data" and once inside the folder, locate the existing "Initfs_Win32" file.
5. Finally, go back to the preset you chose and drag that Initfs_Win32 file into SWBF2's Data folder. If it asks to replace the original file, click ok.
After that, that’s it - launch the game and enjoy the boost!
TROUBLESHOOTING:
Having trouble launching the game? Follow these steps:
1. Download the additional "Extreme Initfs Launch Fix" file and open it 2. Now, navigate to the root folder where Star Wars Battlefront 2 is installed 3. Finally, place the included .dll file next to where the starwarsbattlefrontii.exe is located Once done, you should be able to launch the game normally again.
For additional context, this .dll file is the same file that is generated when you launch mods with FrostyModManager and is required in order for mods to load properly in-game. Please report any additional issues you may encounter in the "Bugs" tab on this Nexus page, but other than that, enjoy!
Want to learn more about the contents of this mod, or want to make your own custom adjustments to the mod? You can do all of this and much more by opening it with my new open-source program, InitfsTools! Check it out here: https://github.com/pookatv/InitfsTools
Specifically in Scripts/Game.cfg, you will see the additional settings that I added to optimize the game in categories, as well as brief descriptions of what they do. Besides the Balanced and Extreme categories, you will also notice a third category, called "Ultimate Settings". These are powerful tweaks that aren’t active by default because changing them can visually break parts of the game, but if you're desperate for more FPS, you can explore them at your own risk. To use them, simply remove the "#" next to these lines, then save the file to activate them in-game.
For example, if you are wondering why I didn't disable visuals like clouds or fog for any of the presets, that is because these effects are tied to other important aspects of the game, such as shield visibility, gunfire, and ability outlines. I personally find this very important in gameplay, especially shields, because for instance, you would probably be confused as to why someone like Iden Versio isn't taking damage only to realize that she has an invisible shield. That is something I don't want you to be confused about, but you could disable it if you really wanted to (remove the "#" at EmitterSystem.EnableRendering 0).
Running a menu mod like No Holograms Remastered on the extreme preset? Make sure to search for "WorldRender.SimpleVolumetricsEnable" and replace the 0 with a 1 - this will fix any issues with the menu being black without you having to resort to the balanced preset!
Keep in mind that results will vary depending on your system - but you’ll almost certainly see a performance boost with this mod. Enjoy a smoother Battlefront experience!
Version Changelog:
Update 2.0 - Brand New Day Update
- (Balanced/Extreme) Fixed the TAA blur, especially when running at lower resolutions. Read more below:
"It's been a year since this mod was released and I decided to take the step into finishing the work that was never truly finished. One of the biggest complaints I've read through was how blurry the TAA redesign was for many players. I'm happy to announce that with a few adjustments, I strongly believe we have finally perfected Battlefront 2's TAA. Take a look below (80% resolution scale, 1920x1080 downscaled to 1532x864):"

- (Balanced/Extreme) Added a plethora of new settings that increase performance for both presets by A LOT - comparison below:
- (Balanced/Extreme) Reworked the ambient occlusion settings to improve performance at minimal visual cost:
- Selecting the lowest setting (Off) works the same way as before - highest performance boost but worst look
- The Advanced AO setting has been improved significantly - both better fps AND better shading, making for a solid competitor to HBAO
- The HBAO setting has also been improved - huge fps boost at the cost of slightly lower quality shading
- The HBAO Full setting remains untouched visually and performingly, being the highest cost of the setting group
- (Balanced/Extreme) Reworked the post-processing settings to improve performance at minimal visual cost:
- Reworked SSR reflections for medium, high, and ultra quality settings to provide much more performance inside reflection-heavy maps such as Naboo
- Screen resampling is now turned off for the lowest quality setting and better adjusted for medium quality
- Color grading quality is now reduced to low for the lowest quality setting, kept at high for medium, high, and ultra settings
- (Balanced/Extreme) Fixed a bug where shader corruption would appear when tabbing out of the game in fullscreen mode
- (Balanced/Extreme) POSSIBLY fixed a rare crash instance when playing the game for a prolonged time
- (Balanced) Fixed an issue where lights would disappear in front of the player when getting too close
- (Balanced) Fixed an issue where some maps would have shaded areas with incorrect lighting (usually abnormally bright spots)
- (Extreme) Massively improved the performance on maps with lots of water such as Kamino and Scarif - expect a huge fps boost
- (Extreme) Improved performance when scoping out enemies with some weapons
- (Extreme) Fixed an issue where the sun's lens flare would blind the player's screen on Geonosis - the glare is now hardly noticeable!
- Debloated the Initfs file entirely - the file now takes much less space and as a result makes the game boot a little faster
- Removed unnecessary settings in the initfs file for both presets
- Added more debug settings for the debug list
- More secret Ultimate settings have been added to the list, you can toggle them to your liking using InitfsTools
