Ambush

English Description
Hide among the trees. Wait for your prey. By the time steel is drawn, the enemy will already be surrounded.
Ambush adds a complete stealth, detection, counter-ambush and tactical ambush-battle system to Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.
Use forests, darkness and elite troops to conceal your movements before launching a surprise attack. AI lords can also set ambushes against the player, or use stealth to escape when pursued by a stronger enemy.
Main Features
- Adds a dedicated Ambush ability icon to the campaign map.
- Click the ability icon or press Insert to enter or leave ambush.
- While ambushing, party movement speed is reduced and the campaign-map party model becomes partially transparent.
- A stealth sound effect plays when ambush is activated.
- Hostile AI parties have difficulty detecting, pursuing or attacking a concealed party.
- The ability icon displays current stealth strength and cooldown time.
- Hover over the icon while not concealed to view your estimated stealth strength.
- The icon gains a golden glow while the ability is active.
- Campaign music is temporarily reduced while the player is concealed and returns after leaving ambush.
Stealth Strength
Stealth strength is calculated dynamically rather than using a fixed value.
It is affected by:
- Scouting skill
- Tactics skill
- Leadership skill
- Total party size
- Average troop quality
- Number of prisoners
- Current terrain
- MCM difficulty setting
Small, disciplined and experienced warbands are ideal for ambushes. Large armies and parties carrying many prisoners are considerably easier to detect.
Terrain Effects
Terrain determines how quickly stealth strength decays.
- Forest: The best terrain for prolonged concealment. Stealth decays extremely slowly.
- Swamp: Provides strong natural concealment.
- Mountains, canyons and cliffs: Provide useful cover.
- Snow and rural terrain: Cause moderate stealth decay.
- Plains and ordinary terrain: Use the standard decay rate.
- Deserts and dunes: Offer very little cover and cause the fastest stealth decay.
Troop Quality
The average tier of your troops modifies stealth strength.
- Parties containing many low-tier troops receive a penalty.
- Tier 3 troops are the neutral baseline.
- High-tier and Tier 6 troops increase stealth strength.
Experienced soldiers are better at maintaining formation, concealing their movement and following ambush orders.
Prisoner Penalties
Prisoners make concealment more difficult.
- 1–10 prisoners: Minor penalty.
- 11–19 prisoners: Increasing penalty.
- 20–50 prisoners: Moderate to severe penalty.
- More than 50 prisoners: Effective concealment becomes nearly impossible.
Prisoners are also included in the estimated stealth strength displayed when hovering over the ability icon.
Ambush Battles
Attacking a hostile party while concealed triggers a special ambush encounter.
- A unique ambush conversation replaces the standard encounter dialogue.
- The only dialogue option is “Attack,” immediately beginning the ambush battle.
- Enemy parties suffer initial casualties.
- The enemy loses morale and becomes disorganized.
- Nearby hostile parties cannot provide normal reinforcements during the ambush.
- Ambush effects can apply to armies, besieging forces and related field battles.
Special Deployment Areas
Successful ambush battles do not use the normal long-distance field-battle deployment.
- The ambushed force is concentrated in a small central deployment area.
- The ambushing force can deploy behind and on both flanks of the enemy.
- The ambusher’s deployment area forms a U-shaped enclosure around the target.
- The red area represents the deployment zone of the ambushed force.
- The blue area represents the deployment zone of the ambushing force.
- A short safety gap remains between the two deployment zones.
- The deployment camera can freely inspect the battlefield.
- After deployment, the ambushing force immediately launches its attack.
Bloodlust Buff
After a successful ambush, all soldiers on the ambushing side receive Bloodlust:
- +20% attack speed
- +20% movement speed
The effect applies to infantry, cavalry, ranged units and later reinforcements.
Normal battles and the ambushed side do not receive this bonus.
AI Ambushes
AI lords can use the same ambush system.
- Only lord parties can actively enter ambush.
- Bandits, patrols and ordinary roaming parties cannot actively use ambush.
- Armies cannot actively enter ambush, but they can still be ambushed.
- AI lords may set an ambush at night or while travelling through forests.
- An AI lord pursued by a stronger enemy may use ambush to conceal itself and escape.
- AI parties will not use ambush if their estimated stealth strength is below 40.
- Concealed AI lords remain hidden from the player until detected or until they leave ambush.
Counter-Ambush System
Enemy parties use their scouting ability to detect concealed targets.
- Counter-ambush detection range is capped at 15.
- If a party’s actual sight range is below 15, its real sight range is used.
- Stealth strength above 80 is very difficult to detect.
- Stealth strength below 40 is much easier to expose.
- Only the strongest nearby detector performs a check during each detection interval.
- A detected party leaves ambush, enters cooldown and becomes disorganized.
- When the player is detected, the notification identifies the enemy party responsible.
