C'Translate

Auto-translates chat and written books to French - no config, no API key needed.

C'Translate

C'Translate is a client-side chat and book translator for Forge 1.20.1. Everyone else's chat messages - and any written book you read - get auto-detected from whatever language they're written in and translated into French, with zero setup: no config file, no API key, nothing to install besides the mod itself.

Translation currently only goes into French - there's no in-game way to pick a different target language yet. That's planned for a future version.

How it works

  • Every chat message from another player is sent off for translation the moment it arrives. Messages already in French are left alone.
  • Translations pile up in an in-memory "livret" (booklet) rather than spamming your chat log. A short heads-up appears in your action bar when a new one is ready ("Message traduit - /livret pour le lire"); open it whenever you want with:

/livret

Each translated message gets two pages: the original text, then the French translation.

  • Right-click any signed written book (not a blank book-and-quill) to read a translated copy instead of the original - same original-then-translation layout, one page pair per page of the book. Pages already in French are shown once, untouched.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.1
  • Forge 47.4.22+
  • An internet connection (translation runs through free public translation APIs)

Known limitations

  • Target language is fixed to French for now - picking a different target language in-game is planned for a later version.
  • Uses Google Translate's free public endpoint first, with a second free service (MyMemory) as a fallback if that one is unreachable. Both are free, keyless services with their own fair-use limits; on a very chat-heavy server you may occasionally see a message go untranslated rather than showing a wrong result.
  • The livret is session-only - it resets when you close the game.
